Algeria is a French-speaking country and the 7th largest country in Africa, bordering both Morocco and Libya, with a total area of 913,800 km2 (365,000 mi2). It is situated on the Mediterranean coast of Northern Africa, with Morocco to the west, Tunisia to the east and Libya to the south. Its official language is French, and its largest ethnic group is the Algerian people, who are of Berber origin. Algeria has the third-largest standing army in Africa and the second-largest standing army in the world.
The flag of Algeria consists of two equal vertical bars, green and white, charged in the center with a red star and crescent, a symbol of Islam as the nation's prominent faith. The flag was adopted on 3 July 1961, at the same time as the Algerian Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen and the establishment of the first republic in Africa.
